BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Newport Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts, with most hinge, bracket, and weld-repair jobs in Newport Beach running between $180 and $650 installed depending on the part and the extent of the metalwork. Most BFT gate owners call us the same day they notice the sag, and we can usually have a technician out within 24 hours. You’ll know something failed because the gate starts dragging on the pavement, the opener strains like it’s pushing twice the weight, or you see a crack running through a weld that looked fine last season.
This is the page for the Newport Beach homeowner who has a BFT opener doing its job but metal around it giving out. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT. We work on their equipment every week, and we know the metal side of these gates as well as the electronics.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT builds the motor and the control board; the welding and fabrication work we do surrounds it. The parts that fail are the fabricated steel brackets that mount the BFT arm to the gate and the post, the hinge plates and pin assemblies that carry the gate’s weight, and the rack or chain mounting hardware on sliding gates. These are custom-fabricated, not drop-in parts, which means matching them to your BFT model matters less than matching them to your gate’s exact measurements and hinge configuration.
BFT’s Aries, Deimos, and Phobos swing-arm models are common in Newport Beach driveways, as are their sliding-gate operators (the Rigel and Botticelli lines). The arm-mount bracket on an Aries uses a different hole pattern than a Deimos, and if the bracket was welded rather than bolted to the gate frame, the repair approach changes. We measure the gate frame tubing, check the bracket geometry against the arm’s throw, and account for the additional force salt air has already put on the metal.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: BFT does sell replacement mounting hardware, but in our experience the steel quality in their brackets is nothing special. For gates exposed to Newport Beach marine air, we prefer to fabricate brackets from 304 stainless steel, which holds up against corrosion for a decade or more where the factory mild-steel part might last five years. The decision comes down to whether you want to replace the part or retire the problem.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags or scrapes on the driveway. This is almost always hinge wear or a stretched hinge pin, and it puts extra load on the BFT motor every cycle. Left alone, the motor burns out trying to compensate for the drag.
- The opener arm pulls loose from its bracket. The bracket welds or bolts are taking the full cycling force of the arm, and on a swinging gate that cycles dozens of times a day, fatigue shows up as cracks radiating from the bolt holes.
- Visible cracks in welded joints or around mounting plates. Ocean air accelerates rust at the heat-affected zone where the weld met the steel, and that is where the failure starts. A crack you can see is a crack that has already compromised the gate’s geometry.
- The BFT alarm or obstruction sensor trips repeatedly. When the gate drags or flexes from failing welds, the opener reads it as an obstruction and reverses. Owners mistake this for a motor problem when the metal is the root cause.
- Loud creaking or popping from the hinge side. That noise is metal on metal, usually a hinge pin that has worn out of round and is grinding inside the hinge barrel. It means the gate is no longer hanging square.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most BFT-related weld and fabrication repairs in Newport Beach land between $180 and $650 depending on what failed. A straightforward hinge replacement on a single-swing gate typically runs $180 to $300 including new stainless hinge pins and proper shimming to square the gate. Cracked weld repair with grinding and re-welding runs $250 to $450 depending on how many joints need work. Custom stainless bracket fabrication for a BFT arm mount is $350 to $650 including removal of the old bracket, fabrication, installation, and re-calibration of the opener’s travel limits.
- Hinge replacement: $180-$300
- Cracked weld repair (per gate): $250-$450
- Custom stainless BFT arm bracket: $350-$650
- Full fabricated rack or chain mount for slide gates: $400-$700
The price we quote is the price you pay. We walk the gate, make the diagnosis, and write the number down before any work starts. Every part and every weld is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise, and if it isn’t right, we come back and make it right without a discussion.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: whether the gate is visibly sagging when closed, whether you can see cracks in any exposed welds, and whether the hinge pins look worn or snapped. You can also check that the BFT arm is still tight in its mount. Those observations help us diagnose the job before we arrive.
What you should not attempt: grinding out and re-welding a gate frame, replacing hinge pins on a gate that weighs hundreds of pounds, or fabricating a new BFT arm bracket at home. Gates under tension can shift suddenly when a hinge pin is pulled, and that weight can cause serious injury. Welding a bracket with the wrong steel or the wrong rod gives you a part that fails at the worst possible moment, often with the gate in motion. We have rebuilt enough amateur welds to know the pattern. Call us at (760) 852-5601 and we will get it done right the first time.
FAQs
Mild steel welds within two miles of the ocean typically last 5 to 8 years before corrosion compromises them; stainless steel fabrications we install are still going strong at 12 to 15 years and counting. The salt air is the difference, and material choice matters more than weld technique.
Yes, if caught before the crack propagates through the parent metal. We grind out the failed weld, prep the joint, and re-weld with rod matched to the steel, then apply a corrosion-resistant coating. If the surrounding metal is thin from rust, a patch plate or full replacement is the honest fix.
Most hinge replacements and single-bracket repairs are done in one visit of two to four hours. Custom fabrication jobs take a little longer because the steel has to be cut, fit, and welded on site or in the shop before it goes back on the gate. We have those parts on the truck for the most common BFT configurations.
We keep a working inventory of stainless hinge pins, hinge plates, bracket steel, and mounting hardware compatible with BFT Aries, Deimos, Phobos, Rigel, and Botticelli installations, plus parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If it is not on the truck, it is in our shop within a day in most cases. Call (760) 852-5601 with your gate measurements and we will tell you exactly what we need to bring.
