Linear Access Control Installation: The Newport Beach Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Newport Beach typically runs $425 to $980 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a failed component or building out a full keypad-to-operator system. We stock Linear OEM parts and quality aftermarket equivalents on our trucks, so most jobs are completed in a single visit. The usual discovery is a keypad that stopped responding after a coastal fog cycle, an intercom that buzzes but won’t release, or a card reader that worked fine until the marine layer settled in for the season.

What most homeowners don’t realize is that Linear access control has been through three distinct generations of parts since the early 2000s, and a surprising number of “failed” systems are just mismatched components. A keypad from 2008 doesn’t always talk to a receiver from 2019, even when both say Linear on the faceplate. We sort that out before anything gets replaced.

Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent gate service company. We’re not affiliated with Linear, but we’ve been trained on their equipment and stock their parts because this is what Newport Beach driveways have used for decades.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

This covers the Linear access control lines most commonly found on Newport Beach gates: the AP-5 and AE-2000 telephone entry systems, the LRA and LRS series radio receivers, the AK series keypads, and the AM3Plus multi-button transmitters. The trick with Linear is matching the radio frequency generation. Older Linear equipment runs on 318 MHz, while newer systems shifted to 900 MHz spread-spectrum. A new keypad ordered without checking that frequency is a $300 mistake that happens more often than it should.

Look at the label inside the keypad housing or on the side of the receiver. There’s a model prefix and a frequency stamp. If you can’t read it, our techs identify the part on-site before any work is quoted. For Linear specifically, we lean OEM when the part is a safety-critical component like the receiver logic board or the keypad’s weather seal. On simpler items like keypad faceplates or transformer boxes, a quality aftermarket equivalent works just as well and saves you real money. We stock both.

One Newport Beach-specific detail: Linear’s older AE series telephone entry systems are more prone to corrosion failure on the line terminals than any other part we see. The salt air works its way into the board connector over five to seven years, and the symptom is always intermittent: it works at 9 a.m., dead by 3 p.m., fine again the next morning. We’ve seen it hundreds of times from Corona del Mar to the Balboa Peninsula.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad works intermittently, worse after rain or heavy fog. The weather seal on the keypad housing has degraded. Salt moisture gets onto the keypad membrane and the contacts read erratically. On Linear AK series units, the seal is replaceable; we stock it.
  • Intercom buzzes but the gate won’t release. This is usually the receiver relay, not the keypad. The relay mechanically wears out after roughly 50,000 cycles. In a busy Newport Beach driveway with deliveries and landscapers, that’s about six years.
  • Gate opens on its own or won’t stay closed. Phantom activation is nearly always a receiver sensitivity issue, or a competing signal from a neighbor’s older Linear system on the same frequency. We can isolate frequencies and reset the receiver to avoid the conflict.
  • Dead keypad entirely, no response at all. Check the transformer first; it often fails before the keypad does. But if the transformer is live and the keypad is silent, the board has likely shorted from a moisture event.
  • One remote works, another doesn’t, nothing changed. On Linear, remotes are coded to the receiver’s memory slots. Old receivers fill up or drop codes after power surges. Re-flashing and re-coding sometimes fixes this without replacing a single part.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Newport Beach specifically, here’s the honest pricing picture:

  • Keypad replacement (Linear AK series or equivalent): $425-$560 installed
  • Receiver replacement (LRA/LRS series): $380-$520 installed
  • Telephone entry system (AP-5 or AE-2000): $720-$980 installed
  • Full access control retrofit: keypad + receiver + new wiring run: $900-$1,400 depending on gate distance and conduit condition

What drives the range is the wire run. Some Newport Beach estates have the keypad at the curb and the operator 80 feet up the drive. Re-pulling that wire in old conduit costs real labor. Every quote is settled before a single bolt is turned. You’ll know the total, including labor, parts, and any power-run work, before we start. And the job is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do: check the transformer is plugged in and warm to the touch, confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, and visually inspect the keypad for moisture inside the lens or corrosion at the terminals. If you see green crust on a wire connection, don’t touch it with the system live. That’s where it stops for most homeowners.

Access control runs on low voltage in most cases, so the electrical risk isn’t what people assume. The real danger is incorrect wiring to the operator’s open/stop/close inputs. Wire it wrong and the gate can behave unpredictably, including reversing at the wrong moment or failing to stop when it should. A gate that misbehaves near a child or a pet is a serious liability. If the system is wired into a mains-voltage operator or a solar-charged battery bank, that’s another layer of risk best left to someone who does it daily.
