Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

The welded and fabricated components on a Mighty Mule gate are not really model-specific the way a control board is. What matters is whether you have a single-swing MM260, a dual-leaf MM360 or MM371, or one of the heavier MM571/MM572 units pushing a steel or ornamental gate. The mounting brackets, post pivot plates, gate brackets, and the standoff arms that connect the opener to the gate leaf all vary by how much thrust the operator produces and whether the gate is tube steel, ornamental iron, or wood-framed. A bracket that fits an MM260 bolted to a lightweight tube gate will fold like a taco under an MM572 pushing a 16-foot solid steel leaf.

On the parts decision: Mighty Mule ships a zinc-plated stamped-steel post bracket with most kits. It works, for a while. In salt air like we have in Newport Beach, that bracket is often the first thing to go. We fabricate stainless and heavier-gauge powder-coated replacements that take the same bolt pattern, but outlast what came in the box by a wide margin. If the rest of the hardware is sound, an aftermarket fabricated bracket is usually the better call. Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at the free end and scrapes the concrete on the last foot of travel. A hinge weld has stretched or the hinge itself has worn oval. The opener keeps pushing, which means stress moves into the bracket and the post, and then everything starts moving that should not move.
• The post bracket pulls screws or starts to rock. Every open/close cycle becomes a pry bar working against the fasteners. In coastal Newport Beach air, the zinc plating lets go first and the steel loses thickness under the bolt heads. If the bracket is rocking now, it will tear out of the post within months.
• You hear a squeal or a clunk at one exact spot every cycle. The gate is not binding on the opener, it is binding on a weld that has cracked and is flexing. The motor will grunt, push harder, and eventually strip the internal gears trying to muscle a gate that a welder should have freed up months ago.

• The gate still opens but the opener housing moves more than the gate does. The steel post flexes because a post weld has failed and the top of the post is no longer tied to the lower half in a straight line. If the post is moving, every cycle is working the weld until it snaps.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can check safely on your own: the bolts.
